R. Wayne Powers of Abingdon, VA, more recently of Mt. Pleasant, SC, died January 13, 2012.
He was a native of Washington County, Virginia. In 1940, Wayne moved with his new wife, Velma, to Charlotte, NC, where he was credit and collection manager for the CIT Corporation. He lived there for three years and then moved to Greenville, SC, where he began working in the automobile auction business. Wayne, Velma and their family moved back to Abingdon in 1946.
Wayne was a real estate and tobacco auctioneer and served as Supervisor of Sales for the Abingdon tobacco market for three years. He started his automobile auction company in Bristol, TN. When he sold the business, he formed a real estate auction. This company conducted auction sales in three states before Wayne retired several years later. He was also a builder and real estate developer, and he developed three of Abingdon's subdivisions.
Wayne was always interested in church, civic and community affairs. He was past president of Abingdon Civitan Club, was a charter member of Glenrochie Country Club, where he served on the board of directors for several years, and was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Abingdon.
After retirement, Wayne and Velma moved to Mt. Pleasant, SC.
Velma preceded Wayne in death in 2005. He was living at Franke at Seaside, a Lutheran Retirement Community, when he died. Wayne is survived by a brother, Leo Powers of Glade Spring, VA; a daughter, Kitti Mullins and her husband Mike Mullins of Mt. Pleasant, SC; and a son, Roger W. Powers, Jr. and his wife Ronna Powers of Carrollton, TX. He is also survived by three grandchildren: Brooks Goode of Vienna, VA; Stacy Gray of Charleston, SC; and Amy Steele of Lexington, SC; five great-grandchildren: Erica, Brandon and Powers Gray, Kennedy Goode and Morgan Steele; and one great-great-grandson, Landon Gray.
A graveside service for Wayne Powers will be held at Knollkreg Memorial Park in Abingdon, January 18, 2012, at 2:30 p.m. with Pastor Scott Homesley officiating.
